For merchants expanding internationally, checkout is becoming a direct part of the growth equation. PYMNTS Intelligence, citing its “Payments Optimization: Powering Global eCommerce Growth” report with Worldpay, said cross-border demand remains strong, but payment friction still prevents many customers from completing a purchase.
The data points to three pressure areas. First, payment choice matters. Consumers are more likely to trust a merchant when they can pay with the method they already use in their market. Second, local currency presentation still affects confidence, with 49% of cross-border shoppers expecting to pay in local currencies. Third, speed matters, especially for repeat purchases: 84% of shoppers consider one-click checkout an important factor in choosing where to shop.
The merchant-side challenge is equally clear. PYMNTS reported that 72% of merchants see higher failed-payment rates in cross-border transactions than in domestic transactions. For global merchants, this means international expansion is not only a traffic or localization question. It also depends on payment acceptance, issuer behavior, currency display, retry logic, and how easily customers can move through checkout.
