Credit Card Processing Fee Calculator

Credit card processing fees are a percentage of each sale plus a fixed amount per transaction — for example 2.9% + $0.30. Enter your average ticket, monthly transaction count and how much of your volume comes from international cards or needs currency conversion, and this calculator returns your fee per transaction, your monthly cost and the only number worth comparing across providers: your effective rate.

A worked example at typical rates

$100 average ticket, 500 transactions a month, 20% of them on international cards and 20% of volume converted. The rate is a typical published online rate of 2.9% + $0.30 with a 1.5% international surcharge and a 1% conversion fee. As of 2026-09-09 that mix costs $1,850.00 a month — an effective rate of 3.70%.

How the fee is calculated

Fee per transaction = amount × percentage rate + fixed fee

International cards usually carry a surcharge on top of the domestic rate, and currency conversion adds a separate percentage on the converted share of your volume. Monthly cost adds any monthly fee plus dispute and refund events.

Effective rate = monthly cost ÷ monthly volume

Under Interchange++ the percentage is the sum of interchange, scheme fee and the processor's markup; the calculator lets you enter each part so the effective rate stays comparable with a blended plan.

What this calculator does not include

  • Interchange variation by card type and region on blended plans — the blended rate already absorbs it; the calculator does not re-derive it
  • Scheme assessments and cross-border scheme fees that some providers pass through separately
  • Settlement transfer fees, FX reference-rate spread beyond the stated conversion fee, and rolling reserves
  • Taxes on fees, minimum monthly volume requirements, and whether the original processing fee is returned on refunds
  • Local payment methods (from 0.8% on our blended plan) — this version covers card payments only
  • Any rate marked “from” or “confirmed in quote” — floors or account-specific figures, not guarantees

Processing fee FAQ

  • Multiply the transaction amount by 0.03 and add any fixed per-transaction fee. On a $100 sale, a 3% + $0.30 plan costs $3.30, so you receive $96.70.

  • Among the providers in the table on this page, published online card rates run from 2.5% to 3.49% plus a fixed fee (accessed 2026-09-09), and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce cites a typical range of 1.5% to 3.5%. Whether 3% is high depends on your ticket size: on a $10 sale the fixed fee matters more than the percentage.

  • Total fees paid in a month divided by total card sales in that month. It is the only figure that lets you compare a blended plan with an interchange-plus plan on equal terms.

  • Cross-border transactions carry higher scheme costs and risk. Stripe, PayPal and Airwallex each publish a 1.5% international-card surcharge (accessed 2026-09-09), and a separate currency-conversion fee applies when settlement happens in another currency.

  • No. A plan with a lower percentage but a higher fixed fee costs more on small tickets, and international or conversion surcharges can outweigh a lower domestic rate.

  • The merchant pays the processor. Rules on passing the fee to customers as a surcharge differ by country and card scheme, so check scheme rules and local law before adding one.
