Stripe Gets 71% of Payment Firms’ AI Agent Package Downloads

Eight payment companies publish AI agent toolkits, MCP servers and agent CLIs on npm. In September 2026 their 17 packages had 283,129 downloads, and Stripe’s three took 70.8%. Visa’s CLI, first published in April, was third with 26,375, while Adyen’s and Worldpay’s MCP servers had under 1,000 each.

Developers downloaded the AI agent packages that eight payment companies publish on npm 283,129 times in September 2026. Stripe’s three packages accounted for 200,394 of them, or 70.8%.

HaiPay counted 17 packages published under the companies’ own npm scopes: agent toolkits, which plug a company’s API into agent frameworks; Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, which expose it to AI assistants; and command-line tools built for agents.

Stripe, then Coinbase and Visa

Stripe’s agent toolkit had 86,396 downloads in September, its MCP server 58,974 and its Link CLI, which lets agents get payment credentials from a Link wallet, 55,024. Coinbase’s five packages had 42,679 between them, and Visa’s CLI, described on npm as AI-powered payments for Claude Code, 26,375.

PayPal’s three packages had 6,144, Paddle’s MCP server 5,409, Mastercard’s two 1,145, Adyen’s MCP server 914 and Worldpay’s, published in February, 69. HaiPay found no comparable packages under the npm scopes of Square, Checkout.com, Braintree or Razorpay.

New tools, fast releases

Four of the 17 did not exist in January. Worldpay published its MCP server in February. Visa first published its CLI on 3 April 2026 and has released 727 versions since. Stripe’s Link CLI followed on 15 April and Coinbase’s CLI on 18 May.

Across all 17, monthly downloads rose from 103,783 in January to 283,129 in September, after a peak of 384,405 in April.

Small next to the SDKs

The numbers are small beside the companies’ main software kits. Stripe’s core npm package was downloaded 85.9 million times in September, about 430 times its three agent packages combined. In January the multiple was about 270: the core package has grown faster this year than the agent tools.

On PyPI, Python’s package index, Stripe’s agent toolkit had 6,511 downloads in September and Coinbase’s 6,379.

Why this matters

For merchants and payment providers, these packages are one of the few measurable signs of which payment APIs developers are wiring into AI agents. On npm, so far, that is mostly Stripe, with Visa the fastest newcomer.

What this does not show

Downloads are not users, agents or payments. npm counts include automated installs by build systems, and hosted MCP servers that need no download are not counted. HaiPay did not contact the companies named.

What to watch

Whether Visa’s CLI overtakes Coinbase’s packages.

Whether more acquirers publish their own MCP servers.

And whether agent package downloads start to grow faster than the core SDKs.

Stripe’s share of September 2026 npm downloads of AI agent toolkit, MCP server and agent CLI packages published by eight payment companies

1 to 30 September 2026

HaiPay count of npm downloads, from the npm downloads API, of 17 AI agent toolkit, MCP server, agent CLI and agentic commerce packages published under the official npm scopes of eight payment companies, summed by calendar month. September 2026: 283,129 downloads; Stripe 200,394 (70.8%), Coinbase 42,679, Visa 26,375, PayPal 6,144, Paddle 5,409, Mastercard 1,145, Adyen 914, Worldpay 69. Monthly totals rose from 103,783 in January 2026. General developer CLIs and design-system MCP servers are excluded. Counts include automated installs and are not users or payments.

Methodology and limitations

Compiled by HaiPay on 22 October 2026. HaiPay listed every package under the official npm scopes of 12 payment companies and kept those whose name or npm description identifies an AI agent toolkit, Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, agent command-line tool or agentic commerce client: 17 packages from eight companies. Stripe: @stripe/agent-toolkit, @stripe/mcp, @stripe/link-cli. Coinbase: @coinbase/agentkit, @coinbase/agentkit-model-context-protocol, @coinbase/agentkit-langchain, @coinbase/payments-mcp, @coinbase/coinbase-cli. Visa: @visa/cli. PayPal: @paypal/agent-toolkit, @paypal/mcp, @paypal/agentic-commerce-spec. Paddle: @paddle/paddle-mcp. Mastercard: @mastercard/developers-agent-toolkit, @mastercard/developers-mcp. Adyen: @adyen/mcp. Worldpay: @worldpay/worldpay-mcp. Excluded were general developer CLIs (@stripe/cli, @coinbase/cdp-cli), an AI billing library (@stripe/ai-sdk), a payment protocol library whose description does not mention agents (@coinbase/x402) and design-system MCP servers (@coinbase/cds-mcp-server, @razorpay/blade-mcp). No qualifying package was found under the Square, Checkout.com, Braintree, Razorpay, Squareup or Checkoutcom scopes. Daily downloads for 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2026 were taken from the npm downloads API and summed by calendar month. In September 2026 the 17 packages had 283,129 downloads: Stripe 200,394 (agent toolkit 86,396, MCP 58,974, Link CLI 55,024), Coinbase 42,679, Visa 26,375, PayPal 6,144, Paddle 5,409, Mastercard 1,145, Adyen 914 and Worldpay 69. Monthly totals were 103,783 in January 2026 and peaked at 384,405 in April. Publication dates and version counts come from the npm registry: @visa/cli was first published on 3 April 2026 and has 727 versions; @stripe/link-cli on 15 April 2026 with 67; @coinbase/coinbase-cli on 18 May 2026. Stripe’s core npm package, stripe, had 23,181,173 downloads in January 2026 and 85,907,570 in September, against 87,066 and 200,394 for its agent packages. Python packages were counted from pypistats.org, which keeps 180 days of data: in September 2026 stripe-agent-toolkit had 6,511 downloads, coinbase-agentkit 6,379 and paypal-agent-toolkit 283; stripe-agent-toolkit also shows 446,105 downloads in April, 946,317 in May and 285,685 in June, a spike HaiPay could not explain and does not use. Download counts include automated installs by build and test systems, are not unique users and say nothing about payments made. Hosted MCP servers that need no package download, and packages outside these scopes, are not counted. HaiPay did not contact any company named here.
