“Stablecoins are opening up a new layer of programmable money, but for most institutions the hard part is the operational reality.”
VISA INTRODUCES AN ENTERPRISE STABLECOIN PLATFORM
Visa has launched the Visa Stablecoin Platform, or VSP, to help financial institutions, fintech companies, payment providers and crypto businesses operate stablecoin products through a single managed environment.
The platform initially supports Open USD, also known as OUSD, and provides connectivity for minting, redeeming, holding and transferring the stablecoin.
VSP is initially available in beta testing with selected clients. Visa has not announced a date for general market availability.
WHAT THE PLATFORM INCLUDES
VSP combines several infrastructure components that institutions would otherwise need to assemble separately.
Its initial capabilities include:
- Connectivity for minting and redeeming Open USD
- Stablecoin holding and transfer functionality
- Onchain wallet infrastructure
- Visa Wallet-as-a-Service
- Bank-account connectivity
- User permissions and policy controls
- Dual-control approval workflows
- Audit logs
- Secure passkeys
- Transfer allow lists
Institutions can use a Visa-managed wallet stack or connect compatible existing wallets.
Visa said clients will also be able to connect bank accounts and configure which users can initiate or approve stablecoin movements.
CONNECTION TO VISA’S PAYMENT NETWORK
The platform is designed to connect stablecoin activity with Visa’s existing network and payment services.
Visa said VSP is interoperable with its existing stablecoin settlement, stablecoin-linked card and stablecoin money-movement capabilities.
For institutions already using Visa’s settlement, treasury or currency solutions, the platform is intended to provide another route for incorporating stablecoins into existing operational workflows.
However, VSP should not be interpreted as making every Visa transaction a stablecoin payment. The platform is a separate enterprise capability offered to eligible participating clients.
OPEN USD IS THE INITIAL SUPPORTED ASSET
At launch, VSP begins with Open USD, a stablecoin introduced by Open Standard.
Visa’s announcement does not state that every major stablecoin or blockchain is already supported. Any expansion to additional assets or networks would require a separate confirmation.
This distinction matters for financial institutions evaluating interoperability, liquidity, custody, reserve structure and regulatory obligations.
WHY THE PLATFORM MATTERS
Stablecoin products require more than blockchain connectivity.
Institutions must also manage wallet security, approval controls, auditability, bank-account connections, compliance procedures and the movement between traditional money and onchain assets.
Visa is positioning VSP as an operational layer that brings these functions into a more unified environment.
The development reflects a wider payment-industry shift in which established networks are building infrastructure that connects traditional payment systems with tokenised and programmable forms of value.
